Equity-Related News, Reports, and Tools
2021 California Health Interview Survey Data Reveals Health Equity Gaps: A new report from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research highlights the impact of the 2021 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) results, the nation’s largest state health survey. The report provides an overview of how many times 2021 CHIS data was used in publications and cited in news stories, as well as how many times the data was accessed through the portal this year.
The report notes that the October 2022 release of CHIS 2021 data included responses from 25,415 households. The data was cited in nearly 100 publications, such as peer-reviewed journal articles, policy briefs, and government reports in 2022, and more than 90,000 queries were run in the data portal.
Advancing Birth Equity in Los Angeles County Interview Findings and the Impact of Structural Racism in Black Neighborhoods: Clinic Interview Findings and the Impact of Structural Racism in Black Neighborhoods: Across the country and in Los Angeles County, Black women and birthing people continue to disproportionately experience negative birthing outcomes and birthing experiences compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Despite the fact that Black deliveries on average account for only about eight percent of births in the county, Black babies are two-to-three times more likely to die in the first year of life compared to white babies; and the rate of babies born prematurely is 50 percent higher among Black birthing people than for white or Asian babies.
Engaging Community Members and Key Stakeholders in the Development of a Birth Equity Hospital Designation: There are over 4,000 hospitals in operation in the US, where an estimated 98.4% of women give birth. Research shows that maternal mortality rates increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Black women having the highest rates of maternal mortality, including severely high rates of COVID-related maternal deaths. Despite the higher rates of perinatal complications for Black women receiving hospital care, hospitals remain popular access points that many women and birthing people turn to for essential services.
Lessons Along the Journey - Taking Action Toward Racial Justice in Public Health Systems: In this three-part webinar series, Prevention Institute staff talk openly and honestly about operationalizing racial justice in our work and the lessons we’re learning as we go.
They uplifted lessons from resistance movements led by communities of color against white supremacy and systemic racism, discussed the power of cultivating authentic partnerships and power sharing, and shared emerging policy and narrative themes.
Centering Racial Justice to Strengthen the Public Health Ecosystem: Lessons from COVID-19: Public Institute partnered with Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) to explore opportunities and strategies that challenge the public health field to root our practice in racial justice and health equity.

California Coalition for Black Birth Justice: Over the last year, the California Coalition for Black Birth Justice, a statewide collective of birth equity and reproductive justice experts, developed the first California Black Birth Justice Agenda, with a set of prioritized actions meant to advance birth justice for Black families across the state. This agenda was co-created by the strategic advisors of the Coalition by combining our knowledge, capacity, lived experience, power, and deep love for the Black community. They believe these actions have significant potential to drive necessary systemic change. This draft is the result of 6 months of planning, convening, brainstorming, and developing, and they plan to release the final agenda in 2023, but first, they need your help.
