Center for Health Equity Update
Center for Health Equity Launches Book Club: In an effort to find engaging ways to foster personal and professional development on our team, the Center for Health Equity recently started a book club. Participation in the book club is voluntary for CHE staff and has been a fantastic way to encourage us to try something new, improve ourselves, encourage each other to continue to learn, and connect with one another through dialogue and team discussion. Book topics are chosen based on the interest of the group, with staff-lead discussions scheduled at the mid-point and conclusion of the book. By reading, staff have gained new perspectives on the collective work our office doing to advance equity for the communities the we serve.
Book club participants recently read Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. The book examines the struggles people from all different races face due to the legacy left behind by slavery in the United States. The book also illustrates how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. The book allowed for a rich discussion between the members of the book club and allowed a safe space to share personal experiences.
