Center for Health Equity Update
Ensuring the LA County Pandemic Response and Recovery Meets the Need of Immunocompromised Individuals and People with Disabilities: In February 2020, the Board of Supervisors directed the Department of Public Health ( to integrate strategies that assist people who are immunocompromised and people with disabilities by providing access to rapid antigen tests, in-home vaccinations, appropriate personal protective equipment, and COVID-19 educational materials in formats that accommodate people who are hard of hearing, deaf and low vision.
In June 2022 the Center for Health Equity prepared the response which included a summary of strategies enacted by Public Health and areas of improvement based on an assessment of the strategies and conversations with key stakeholders. Recommendations from a February 2022 listening session were used as a measure by which to assess current strategies that Public Health is implementing to support people who are immunocompromised and people living with disabilities.

COVID-19 Vaccines - Studying Historical Successes and Failures: Communities of color experience significantly higher rates of COVID-19 infection compared to White Americans, but have gotten vaccinated at a slower pace. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity hosted a public webinar to discuss lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and previous vaccination efforts that could improve vaccination rates among communities of color
Supporting CBOs and Public Health Departments During COVID and Beyond: Years of inadequate funding left our nation’s public health systems ill-prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is also a real opportunity to rebuild better, creating a new foundation for lasting, transformative change, community resilience, and equity.
New CDC Fatal and Nonfatal Overdose Data Dashboards: Two new data dashboards that make fatal and nonfatal overdose data more accessible and customizable: DOSE Dashboard includes monthly and annual nonfatal overdose data from syndromic surveillance systems in 42 states, including the District of Columbia.

Accessing Recovery Funds: The County of Los Angeles Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative is partnering with the Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) and BDO FMA to host a free virtual information session for the community and faith-based organizations on navigating the upcoming American Rescue Plan (ARP) contracting opportunities.

Capacity Strengthening Grants for Immigrant Focused Community Based Organizations: The Los Angeles County Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) in the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) has announced the launch of the Capacity Strengthening Grants for Immigrant Focused Community Based Organizations initiative, a program to support community organizations serving Los Angeles County immigrant residents who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lessons Along The Journey - Taking Action Toward Racial Justice in Public Health Systems: Over the last 15 years, Prevention Institute (PI) has been on a journey that is taking us beyond the work of understanding and documenting health inequities towards an emphasis on operationalizing racial justice for improved health, safety, and wellbeing. Along this journey, PI has prioritized the importance of sharing and learning together across projects to build our collective intelligence as part of our own internal process.

Funding Opportunities
2022 Systems for Action Call for Proposals: Systems for Action recently released a Call for Proposals (CFP) to provide $2.5M for a new cohort of research studies to produce new, actionable evidence about how to help medical, social, and public health systems collaborate to address structural barriers to health and health equity, including racism and the social conditions that impact health. There are two categories of research awards.

Strengthening U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, Workforce, and Data Systems: CDC recently announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity for Strengthening U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, Workforce, and Data Systems Department of Health and Human Services. This funding is a first-of-its-kind, non-categorical and cross-cutting program, intended to help meet critical infrastructure and workforce needs in the short-term; and it should also make possible strategic investments that will have lasting effects on public health agencies across the United States.
The deadline to apply is August 15th.
Grant Opportunity Beaumont Foundations: Applications are open for the de Beaumont Foundation's Modernized Anti-Racist Data Ecosystems (MADE) for Health Justice grant opportunity. The grants seek to accelerate the development of health-focused local data ecosystems that center principles of anti-racism, equity, justice, and community power.
The deadline to apply is August 31st.
Requesting Proposals - Innovative Research to Advance Racial Equity: Evidence for Action released an open and rolling call for proposals, Innovative Research to Advance Racial Equity. Through this CFP they seek to fund researchers, practitioners, community leaders, advocates, policymakers, and/or other stakeholders to investigate the impacts of various social interventions on health and racial equity outcomes.

End the Epidemic Grassroot Fellowship Opportunity: End the Epidemics (ETE) is excited to announce a new Grassroots Fellowship Program! The program is part of the coalition’s commitment to building people power across the state to fight for policies that will help to achieve greater health equity by centering the voices and experiences of impacted communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and people who use drugs.
The live, online training will take place from 10 am-3 pm on September 28-29, and October 11-12.
